OBD-II vehicle diagnostics (Beta)

Beta feature

OBD-II diagnostics is currently a Beta feature, and you need to turn it on in Settings.

With a Bluetooth ELM327 or compatible OBD-II adapter, FleetDispatch can:

  • Automatically detect the vehicle identification number (VIN) and match it to the vehicle that has the same VIN in your vehicle details
  • Read real vehicle speed for driving behavior scoring
  • Suggest mileage and fuel level values
  • Read trouble codes (DTCs) and turn them into inspection records

Get started

  1. In Settings, open OBD-II (Beta) and turn on Connect to OBD during trip.
  2. Under Nearby Devices, choose your adapter. The app remembers the device you select. Until you choose one, the app automatically scans for common compatible devices.
  3. During a trip, keep the app in the foreground (open), and it connects to the adapter over Bluetooth.

On Android 12 and later, the app asks for the Nearby devices permission, but only after you turn on OBD-II.

Limitations

  • Works only with gasoline and hybrid vehicles, not fully electric vehicles.
  • Available on iPhone, iPad, and Android phones and tablets, but not on Mac.
  • In multi-user setups, only admins can clear OBD trouble codes, and each clear is recorded in an audit log.

Privacy

The VIN, speed, mileage, fuel level, and trouble codes that are read stay only on your device (and, on Apple devices, in your iCloud), and they’re never sent to us. For details, see the FleetDispatch Privacy Policy.
